English Reading Tips for ESL/EFL Learners | Teaching ESL Reading

If you’re looking for some English reading tips, you’ve come to the right place! We have three of our favourite English reading tips, along with a link to where you can get even more of them.

There are many reasons why you might want to improve your English reading skills. Maybe you want to improve your score on the reading sections of the TOEIC or TOEFL test. Perhaps you want to be able to travel the world confidently and easily. Maybe you want to read that English novel that hasn’t been translated into your own language yet.

English Reading Tips: The Top 3

Whatever the reason for wanting to improve your skills, these English reading tips will help you! Are you ready to level-up? Then keep on reading.

English Reading Tip #1: Post-Reading Activities

“It ain’t over ’til the fat lady sings” is a popular English idiom. It means that even though something seems like it might be finished, it actually isn’t. You might read a magazine or newspaper article, or an English novel and when you finish the last word, think you’re done. If you do this, you won’t get as much as you can out of the experience.

One of the best ways to improve your English reading skills is to use pre, and post-reading activities. Check out this short article for some ideas of things you can do after you’re done reading a novel.

English Reading Tip: Post-Reading Activities

Let’s continue with some more English reading tips!

Reading Tip #2: Use Context Clues

We LOVE context clues, and you should too. If you don’t know what they are, they’re clues that you can use to help you understand words that you don’t know. When you’re reading, if you have to keep using your dictionary every five seconds, you’ll get annoyed and give up. If you use context clues, you can keep reading. It takes a bit of practice, but you can do it!

Don’t worry-it’s easier than you might think. It just takes a bit of common sense. Do you have some? Awesome! You can use context clues. Just think of the words you know to guess what you don’t.

If this is the case for you, you’ve come to the right place. We’re going to share our top English reading tips for tests with you. Plus, find out the one thing that you should NEVER do. Are you ready for some English reading test awesome? We hope so!
