Review of Breakthrough ESL Textbook Series
I recently used Breakthrough Plus Student’s Book + Digibook Pack Level 2 by Miles Craven for one of my advanced conversation classes. Breakthrough is a 5 level ESL textbook series, ranging from into to level 5. There is all the standard stuff you can find in most ESL textbooks including a test maker, teacher’s book, interactive practice, CD, etc.
Overall, I was very happy with Breakthrough and would definitely use it again, as well as recommend it to anyone who is looking for a book for conversation or speaking classes.
Here are the reason that I liked using it.
Interesting conversation topics
University students in Korea enjoyed the topics in this book. The topics are general enough that students in other countries would also enjoy it. However, they kind of go beyond the standard hobbies, movies, sports, family, etc that you’ll find in basically every single ESL textbook out there.
Communication is the Focus
There are a good number of communicative type activities for use by partners or small groups. It was pretty easy to plan lessons with this book because most of the activities where quite interesting. When I compare this to some textbooks where I can basically use nothing from them because it’s all terrible, this one comes out far, far ahead!
There’s also some nice writing and listening activities mixed in there.
However, if you’re looking to supplement your ESL textbook with a few games and activities to add some variety in your lessons, check out:
The grammar teaching concepts are manageable chunks so that it won’t be overwhelming for your students. Contrast this to something like the Touchstone Series with these ridiculously confusing grammar sections.
However, they are not too easy and your students will learn a few new things. The practice exercises are helpful for students to consolidate information.
No Information Overload
There is an adequate amount of material on each page. Not too much, so that you get overwhelmed but no wasted pages either, as in some textbooks.
For an example of wasted pages, check out the Smart Choice Series. Lots of filler and fluff in there for sure!
